Swimming
Swimming isn’t just a fun activity – it’s a compulsory part of the national curriculum in England for all primary school children.
By the time children leave primary school (Year 6), they must have had the opportunity to develop certain swimming skills;
- Swim at least 25 metres without stopping (that’s roughly the length of a standard pool)
- Use different swimming strokes (like front crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke)
- Know how to stay safe in water and perform a self-rescue if needed
This is part of their PE (Physical Education) lessons.
Although we do not have a swimming pool on site, we are committed to ensuring all pupils have the opportunity to develop their swimming and water safety skills as part of the PE curriculum.
During Key Stage 2, pupils attend swimming lessons at Broomfields Leisure Centre, led by qualified swimming instructors from the Centre. These sessions are further supported by members of our school staff, both in and out of the water, to ensure pupils feel safe and confident.
For our younger pupils who do not yet attend external swimming sessions, we provide in-school water-based activities designed to build early confidence around water and support sensory development. Each class has the opportunity to spend a full day in our specially designed “Splash Room”, which features a sandpit and a large, shallow pool where children can explore and play in a safe, supportive environment.
Our aim is to make water activities accessible, enjoyable, and beneficial for all pupils, regardless of age or ability.
