Additional Support
At Rosebank, we recognise that for our pupils to thrive, they need more than a carefully planned curriculum. Our additional support and specialist provision are an integral part of school life, helping children to develop communication, emotional wellbeing, physical health, independence, confidence and the skills they need to participate successfully in their learning and wider community.
Speech and Language Therapy (SALT) plays a central role in supporting our pupils. Communication is fundamental to learning, relationships and independence, and our SALT provision works closely with teachers and support staff to understand each child’s communication profile and identify the most effective ways for them to communicate. This includes supporting speech, language, social communication and the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Strategies are embedded throughout the school day so that communication skills are developed and generalised across real-life situations.
Family Support is an important part of our holistic approach. We recognise that families know their children best and that strong partnerships between home and school make a significant difference to outcomes. Our family support helps parents and carers to access advice, guidance and practical support, while maintaining open communication between home and school. We aim to work alongside families to celebrate progress, overcome challenges and ensure that children receive consistent support across different environments.
Our PE and Core Skills provision supports pupils to develop physical confidence, coordination, movement, body awareness and functional skills. Physical development is closely linked to independence, engagement and wellbeing, and our approach provides opportunities for children to practise these skills in meaningful and enjoyable ways. Core skills also support children to develop the foundations they need to participate more independently in everyday school life.
ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) provision supports pupils to understand and manage their emotions, develop positive relationships and build emotional resilience. For many of our pupils, recognising and communicating how they feel can be challenging. ELSA support provides carefully planned opportunities to develop emotional literacy, self-awareness, regulation and coping strategies, helping children to feel more secure and confident in school.
Swimming is an important part of our wider curriculum and provides opportunities to develop physical skills, confidence, independence and water safety. For our pupils, swimming can also support sensory regulation, confidence in new environments and the ability to follow routines and instructions. We value the opportunity for children to develop a practical life skill that can contribute to their safety, health and enjoyment beyond school.
Our National Autistic Society (NAS) accreditation reflects our commitment to providing high-quality, autism-informed provision. Accreditation provides a framework for us to continually evaluate and develop our practice, ensuring that the experiences of autistic pupils and their families remain at the heart of what we do. It demonstrates our commitment to creating an environment where pupils are understood, respected and supported to achieve their potential.
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is fundamental to our approach to behaviour and wellbeing. We recognise that behaviour is a form of communication and seek to understand what a child is communicating through their behaviour rather than simply responding to the behaviour itself. Our approach focuses on understanding individual needs, identifying triggers and barriers, teaching alternative skills and providing appropriate support. We aim to create positive, predictable and supportive environments where children can regulate, communicate their needs and experience success.
Together, these areas of specialist support form an essential part of the Rosebank offer. They ensure that our pupils are supported not only to access learning, but also to develop the communication, physical, emotional, social and independence skills they need to flourish. We believe that every aspect of a child's development matters, and our aim is to provide the right support, at the right time, so that every pupil can make meaningful progress and enjoy success at Rosebank and beyond.
