Positive Behaviour Support

What is PBS?

PBS stands for Positive Behaviour Support. It’s an approach used in schools (and sometimes at home) to understand and support a child’s behaviour in a positive, respectful, and effective way.

What does PBS aim to do?

Rather than just reacting to difficult behaviour, PBS helps to:

  • Find out why a behaviour is happening
  • Teach new, more positive skills or ways of communicating
  • Make changes to the environment or routines to better support the child
  • Promote well-being and independence

How does it help?

PBS focuses on:

  • Understanding the child’s needs and the reasons behind their behaviour
  • Preventing challenges, not just dealing with them after they happen
  • Encouraging positive behaviours through praise, structure, and support
  • Making sure any support is person-centred – tailored to your child

Why is PBS important?

All behaviour is a form of communication. PBS helps adults understand what a child may be trying to tell us through their behaviour, and how we can best support them to thrive emotionally, socially, and academically.

For more information on PBS please speak to your child's class teacher or contact one of the senior leadership team.
